The Tenant's Guide to Seasonal Maintenance: Summer Edition

18th Jun 2019

Category: Property advice

With the days being longer and hopefully warmer, there are a few things you should make sure you’re doing to care for your property in the summer months…

Outside the property is the most obvious place to start. If you find yourself with a sunny weekend, make sure you take the time to maintain the garden (if it is your responsibility in your tenancy agreement). The minimum that will need to be done is ensuring the grass is cut and kept at a manageable length. If you’re a bit of a green thumb why not consider making the garden your own by brightening it up with a few of your favourite seasonal plants and flowers around the borders or in plant pots? That will be sure to impress your guests when they come around for summer BBQ. Speaking of BBQ’s – it’s a good idea to make sure yours is cleaned and prepared for grilling!

Inside your property there are still jobs you can get done on the inevitably rainy days which will make everything feel summer fresh. Take the time to wash your duvets, pillows and curtains and clean the skirting boards. The light in the summer can be unforgiving and will show up any greasy marks on the windows so make sure to give them a good clean. When the weather is nice try to open up your windows to let plenty of fresh air circulate.

Finally, a note on pest control. At this time of year, there are sure to be unwanted creatures around. Pest control in rented properties is the responsibility of both the landlord and tenants. You can do your part to keep pests at bay by clearing any rubbish promptly and keeping everything clean. Pests which are present due to a fault of the tenant will be the responsibility of the tenant. If you’re unsure on what your responsibilities are just check in with your landlord or letting agent – they’ll be able to let you know.
