The Tenant’s Guide to Seasonal Maintenance: Spring Edition

It’s time to dust off the cobwebs of winter and get your house ready for summer.


It’s a cliché but there really is nothing like a big Spring clean to freshen up your home. Take advantage of one of the spring bank holidays to have a proper clear out. Some useful bits to note which can often get missed include taking down curtains and blinds for a deep clean and pulling out furniture to clean those hard to reach spots and making sure mould hasn't built up behind them over the Winter. Make sure that if you notice any structural issues when you do this that you report them to your landlord or letting agent as soon as possible.

It’s also a good idea to check the flooring throughout your house in spring, as this is an area that can take a real battering throughout the winter. Check for any damage and report it to your letting agent or landlord. If it’s just a case of a good clean then consider hiring a carpet or steam cleaner for the weekend as they can work wonders.


If you want to get outside in your garden in the summer then now is your chance to get it looking lovely. It’s likely that your grass will just be starting to grow now that the weather is warming up, so make sure you have a lawn mower ready for regular summer cuts. Hedges and borders will also be starting to grow, so consider chopping them back to a neater size. You should also inspect the garden for any winter damage and clear up fallen leaves and debris.

What NOT to do

It can be tempting when you start to freshen up your home in the Spring to go further and decide to paint a wall or take on a DIY project. Just make sure before you do this that your landlord is ok with it! You should also check with them before undertaking any major garden projects like uprooting plants.
